5.8.18 Gary Cooley–JuneBug Retro Resort

A perfect spring day for a great Paint-out with Gary Cooley providing wonderful instruction, insights, and stories. The JuneBug Retro Resort was beautiful and more than welcoming to our large group of painters. There was much more to paint then just the lovely RV’s … meadows, woods, a stream & even a farm!

I was born and raised in rural southeastern Michigan, and studied  illustration and painting at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Mi.

After a long career in illustration which began in New York where my work  appeared in most major magazines, on many book covers, (murder mystery was a specialty), Broadway posters, and in several children’s books. It also appeared in the Society of Illustrators “200 Hundred Years of American Illustration”, and in many of their annual exhibitions.  The Illustrations and paintings have been in many juried exhibitions. Taking a few medals along the way .

I then moved on to Detroit and finally finished up my illustration career in Atlanta.  While in Atlanta I began coming to the Tryon area, where I exhibited my paintings at the Skyuka Gallery.  My wife and I fell in love with the mountains.

Three years ago I left the illustration field and we moved to Hendersonville, NC where I now paint full time. The scenery of the mountains and the people of the area offer endless inspiration for my work.

I am in the River Arts District along with 9 other artists at 362 Depot St.  I will soon be exhibiting at the Gallery at Flat Rock.
